Compost bins have two very useful jobs in life. One, they help the gardener make wonderful, rich dark compost, which can be used to enrich the soil in your garden – be it flower borders or vegetable patch. The other benefit is that they reduce the amount of rubbish that goes into your bin – and onto landfill. Simply keep a small bin on the kitchen counter and fill it with all your vegetable matter; cabbage leaves, leftover veg, potato peelings, egg shells – anything but meat. Add this to the compost bin, along with grass clippings, swept up leaves, old compost and plant trimmings and you’ll soon reap your reward. There are all kinds of compost bins – the plastic sort that look a bit like an extra wheelie bin, but are highly practical, or more attractive wooden kinds that usually take up a bit more space.
